GENERAL SANTOS CITY (MindaNews/08 June) -- Thousands of local and overseas jobs will be up for grabs for jobseekers in Region 12 or Southwestern Mindanao in a three-day "mega jobs fair" that will open Friday here and in nearby Koronadal City.
Ma. Gloria Tango, Department of Labor and Labor (DOLE) Region 12 director, said the jobs fair is in line with the governments continuing efforts to provide employment opportunities for new college and technical-vocational graduates as well as displaced local and overseas workers from the region.
Our preparations are on track and so far we already received confirmations from a significant number of recruitment or job placement agencies and some companies, she said.
Tango said the mega jobs fair, which coincides with this years Independence Day celebration, will formally open on Friday at the Rizal Park complex in Koronadal.
She said they expect President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to grace the opening of the jobs fair after leading the traditional Independence Day flag-raising rites at the same venue.
Citing an advisory from Malacanang, Koronadal Mayor Fernando Miguel said the President will visit the area along with some Cabinet members to personally monitor the progress of the national governments interventions against the impact of the global financial crisis.
The government earlier launched the Comprehensive Livelihood and Emergency Employment Program to help ease the impact of the crisis that saw the collapse of financial markets in the United States and other major economies.
It also forged strategic cooperation with member-states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations to help protect the regions economy, especially the volatile financial market.
Aside from gracing the jobs fair, Miguel added that the President will also lead the distribution of scholarship coupons to beneficiaries of the flagship PGMA Training for Work Scholarship Program of the Technical Education Skills and Development Authority. (Allen V. Estabillo/MindaNews)
